El silencio

[24 de Agosto. Santiago, Chile]

Los enfrentamientos continuaban entre Paseo Ahumada y el frontis de la Casa Central. De pronto nadie supo qué pasó, pero nos encontrábamos corriendo hacia un punto de la calle norte de la Alameda, habían atropellado a un hombre y estaba tirado en el pavimento.

"Asesinos, asesinos.." gritó la multitud en referencia a carabineros, pero la confusión y los gritos cesaban cuando se daban cuenta que había un auto blanco detenido en medio y éste lo había atropellado. Fue un momento de calma, un momento de silencio, el ambiente de pelea entró en un frío receso.

Un cordón de carabineros rodeó al hombre y al auto, los carteles asomaban, la gente murmuraba. Unos 20 minutos habrá demorado la ambulancia en llegar, se llevaron al hombre y, en cuanto se fue, el silencio se rompió y la lucha en la Alameda siguió como antes.

Clashes continued between Paseo Ahumada and the front of the Casa Central of Universidad de Chile. Suddenly no one knew what happened, but we were running to a point of the north street of the Alameda, a man was lying on the pavement, hit by a vehicle.

"Asesinos, asesinos .." shouted the crowd in reference to police, but the confusion and uproar ceased when they realized that there was a white car stopped in the middle and it had run over the man. It was a moment of calm, a moment of silence, the fight entered to an atmosphere of a cold standing by.

A cordon of police surrounded the man and the car, posters appeared, people whispered. The ambulance delayed about 20 minutes to arrive, they took the man and, as it was, the silence was broken and fighting continued on the Alameda as before.
